The EOS 5D Mark III uses the N3 connector. Most Canon pro cameras use this connector as well. Any remote from Canon or a third party with an N3 connector should work with your 5D Mark III. Canon consumer cameras, such as your 550D, use the E3 connector that is basically the same as the end of a 2.5mm stereo headphone cable.

The 5D Mk 2 had more pixels and better AF added and became the 5D Mk3. The 70D had more pixels and better AF added and became the 80D - a completely new model - why not

Continued strong sales of the 5D Mark II put paid to a revolution for the line, or an earlier release date. So the 5D Mark III is a very evolutionary camera. If it isn’t broke – don’t fix it. People do tend to forget what a power house the 5D Mark II was for video, and especially stills and many current owners are well satisfied.

The 5D Mark V was reported to have been added to Canon’s roadmap in October of last year, although it now appears have been scrapped.
